After impressing at Schalke last season, things have gone downhill dramatically for Jonjoe Kenny at Everton this season.
The right-back returned to Goodison Park full of optimism after his successful time in Germany, hopeful he could challenge Seamus Coleman in the position.
That has not proven to be the case, though, with the 23-year-old managing just four appearances so far this season, three of which have come in the EFL Cup.
Elsewhere he’s been out of the picture, failing to make the last three Everton squads after featuring for 77 minutes in the loss to Newcastle United at the beginning of November.
IKZ give it some coverage today and explain that Schalke ‘had no chance’ to keep Kenny in the summer after Everton ‘insisted on a return’.
But Kenny has been ‘rarely used’ by the Toffees since returning, despite the fact Coleman has had injury problems.
Indeed, they state it is becoming increasingly clear that Everton have ‘no use for Kenny’, which is particularly annoying for the German side given ‘the biggest weak point’ in their squad is the right-back spot.
They would have ‘gladly’ extended his loan deal but sports director Jochen Schneider ‘bit on granite’ when trying to make it make it happen.
Everton wanted to keep him but at the moment, whatever solution Carlo Ancelotti comes up with seems to be one that doesn’t include the player.
That ‘clearly shows’ he’s a marginal figure at the club, with IKZ stating that ‘maybe this is a chance’ for Schalke to try again for him in January.
To be clear, they are not stating they will make a move nor saying they think it will happen, just positing that given the situation there would be no harm in them trying.
Of course, whether Kenny would want to return is another matter entirely given the situation at the Bundesliga club, yet this is a rumour we may see pick up again in the build-up to January.
