Everton had an exhilarating Sunday against Watford, and, unusually in recent times, it ended with them winning a match against all probability.
Going down 2-0 to Watford, and with Heurelho Gomes playing well, Everton looked set for yet another defeat, but things changed when the goalkeeper had to leave the pitch.
Watford spent much of the summer window being linked with goalkeepers but didn’t manage to get one, and that led to Orestis Karnezis being signed on loan from sister club Udinese on deadline day.
Karnezis set about undoing the good work of Gomes, and Everton put three past the 32 year old. But the Goodison Park side of course played a big part in their own comeback, with Leighton Baines standing out.
A goal and assist were statistics to back up Baines’ contribution, and the Everton fullback has found himself recognised by Gazzetta dello Sport. Each Monday the Italian newspaper pick out a selection from around Europe’s leagues, ignoring their own Serie A, and Baines has been chosen after his Watford efforts.
It’s good news for Everton, at a time when it’s in short supply.
