Amadou Onana has been repeatedly linked with a move to Barcelona this summer, as the Catalan club look for an addition in midfield.

The Belgium international has been described as the first choice for Barca’s transfer chief Deco, but there’s one overriding problem. They simply don’t have the money that Everton would demand.

At one point the Catalan media were crossing their fingers and hoping the Toffees would be relegated to the Championship so that would make a move easier. There were also claims Barcelona could send one or more players to Everton to make the move cheaper, but that didn’t come to anything.

Now Onana has his head on the Euros, but he’s granted an interview to Marca. It seems clear transfer questions were off the agenda given the interview will have been set up to be Euros orientated.

However, Marca tried to get around that with a series of questions about Spain.

First up, he was asked if he’s ever been to Spain, to which Onana replied: “Yes, to be honest, yes. I go there almost every year for vacation because I simply like the country. I like it. The people are very friendly, I think they are very happy. I think the sun and the climate make it that way, but yes, it is a country that I like to visit.”

Then he was asked what he thinks of Spanish football, and said: “Maybe the players there have the greatest technical ability, very skilled players, a football that I like. Yes, it is one of the best leagues in the world. It’s nice to see it.”

And to finish off, he was asked if he’s going to learn Spanish soon, and replied: “Yes, yes. Now I think my sister’s Spanish is better than mine. I think it is similar to French and sometimes I try it. It’s nice.”

Marca probably didn’t get the outright transfer hint they wanted, but they can’t be faulted for effort.
