Everton have ‘aborted’ their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes, with Rafa Benitez focusing on other priorities this summer.
That’s according to A Bola, who say the midfielder could now end up at Wolverhampton Wanderers instead.
The newspaper explains that Nunes was ‘close’ to joining Everton this summer when it appeared that Nuno Espirito Santo would be their next manager.
However, they elected against appointing the Portuguese boss, who instead went to Tottenham and brought in Rafa Benitez as their man to replace Carlo Ancelotti.
That led to talks for Nunes being delayed, but now they have been ‘aborted’ altogether because of Benitez.
According to the newspaper, he has ‘other priorities’ as he looks to reinforce Everton this summer, although what they are isn’t mentioned specifically.
Either way, it seems a move for Nunes is now unlikely to happen despite everything seemingly being wrapped up at one point.
Whether Everton will return once they’ve secured their other targets isn’t clear, but if they do remain interested they may have to move quickly, with Wolves now eyeing up a deal instead.
