If Marca are to be believed then Atletico Madrid are running around Europe and offering €60m for strikers.
In the Spanish newspaper’s Thursday edition, it’s stated that Atletico Madrid have now offered €60m for each of Diego Costa, Gonzalo Higuain and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Chelsea, Napoli, and Borussia Dortmund have all declined Atletico’s advances. The same goes with PSG and Edinson Cavani. Therefore, Marca explain, Atletico may well have a fifth choice, and that’s Everton Romelu Lukaku.
It’s explained that whilst Atletico weren’t really considering Lukaku, their failures elsewhere have made them take notice of the player’s goalscoring stats from last season.
Marca say Atletico haven’t yet contacted Everton, but have spoken to Lukaku’s ‘environment’ about a move, and got an open reaction. Lukaku is represented by Mino Raiola, it’s curious Marca haven’t even mentioned him, and perhaps weakens the story.
A striker, any top name striker, is Atletico’s current state of mind if Marca are to be believed, and it all seems a bit too haphazard to make sense.
Lukaku would surely be less than chuffed to know he was Atletico’s fifth choice, as the club panic to sign a mega money striker.
