Everton manager Rafael Benítez has left Lucas Digne out of his squad for the last four ties and after the Toffees’ latest loss at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion, the Spaniard hinted the 28-year-old doesn’t want to be at Goodison Park.
On New Year’s Eve, Gazzetta dello Sport reported Inter Milan have ‘creeping underlying optimism’ of signing the left-back in the winter market.
This is again relayed in today’s edition of the same newspaper, with additional information on this case. The Serie A winners are in the market for a left wing-back and Filip Kostić was their main target.
A deal for the Serbian in January remains difficult because Eintracht Frankfurt are not keen to do business this month. Simone Inzaghi’s side, therefore, have put the France international on top of their wish list.
Digne’s contract with the Merseyside club runs down in 2025 and a short loan move to the San Siro, until the end of the season, could be ‘excellent’ for him.
The only way to convince the Premier League side to let him leave is via a loan transfer ‘without obligation’. Giuseppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio, the two Inter chiefs, may be open to a ‘right of redemption’ for a player who is not relied upon by Benítez.
According to Gazzetta, Everton ‘like’ Matías Vecino, who has less than six months left on his contract at the San Siro. The newspaper states ‘Benítez may like the idea of exchange of loans’ involving the Uruguayan midfielder and Digne.
Despite the contract expiring in 2022, Vecino ‘doesn’t want to settle’ in the second half of this season. He is ‘disappointed and saddened’ and is in a ‘great hurry to leave Milan’ in January.
With Everton liking the South American and Inter looking to take Digne on loan, Inzaghi’s side and the Toffees ‘have the task of finding the match’ for a deal involving the two players.
It’s worth noting there’s several Italian sources claiming Everton are again keen on Vecino, and we covered claims from SportMediaSet earlier today.
