Everton favourite Kevin Mirallas is taking his first steps into coaching at Union SG, helping the club’s forwards in one-on-ones.
Het Nieuwsblad cover the situation today and how the former winger, who only retired last summer, is now taking his first steps into coaching.
Mirallas decided to retire in September last year after a career that saw him play in Belgium, France, Greece, England, Italy and Turkey over 22 years.
His most notable spell was undoubtedly at Everton, where he managed 38 goals and 31 assists in 186 games in a six-year spell after arriving from Olympiacos in August 2012.
He became a firm fan favourite in those years before two loan spells and then a free transfer to Royal Antwerp in August 2019.
He bounced around various clubs in the four years after that, seeing out his career with AEL Limassol in 2022 to 2023 before deciding to retire.
A return is now on the cards as a coach as Het Nieuwsblad report he recently joined Union’s staff. He was the specific request of manager Sébastien Pocognoli, who asked him to join the team as a kind of consultant.
He is hoping the former Everton man can help his forwards, who have found it very difficult to find the back of the net this season. The club have intervened and want Mirallas to act as a striker coach.
He will work with the club once a week during training in Lier and work with the forwards individually also.
“Kevin came to give us a helping hand at my request,” said Pocognoli.
“As a trainer you can control many things, but each position is specific. That of attackers is different from that of defenders. Our attackers are still young, and Kevin can help them.
“Putting a group on the field that creates opportunities is still the most important job. We succeed week after week, but with those small details Kevin can inspire someone like Franjo (Ivanovic).
“Just as I, as a defender, have conversations with the players at our back, Kevin does so with the attackers. He speaks their language, so they are in a bit of a separate bubble.”
