Over the past week or so, we’ve seen reports in the English media that Chelsea and Wolverhampton were allegedly interested in winger Edon Zhegrova.
The 21-year-old, on loan at Basel from KRC Genk, had enjoyed a decent season with the Swiss side, scoring two goals and assisting another three in 14 league appearances, and while there is an option to buy in the deal, he is unlikely to stay there for much longer.
That’s what Foot Mercato are reporting, claiming that while there might be interest from English sides (they refer to Chelsea and Wolves from the UK media), the player’s preference would be a move to France.
Marseille and Lille are said to be after the player, who could follow in the footsteps of his compatriot, Arber Zaneli, who plays for Stade de Reims.
However, the player’s agent did confirm teams in England have been after his client, although he didn’t go into specifics as to whether the Blues or Nuno Espírito Santo’s side were among them.
Marc Van Osselaer told Foot Mercato: “As things stand, Edon is a very wanted player. There are English clubs, Italian and French sides of a very good level who are interested. Playing in France would be a good opportunity for him, because he really likes the league and feels he could go up a level in a club that has a nice project. He’s a diamond in the rough, who has a huge ceiling”.
This suggests teams like Chelsea and Wolves may have to wait a few more years before getting their hands on the player, since it’s unlikely Frank Lampard has a spot for him right away.
Nuno might, but when you have to contend with players like Adama Traoré and Diogo Jota for a role in the first-team, it might not be the best place to get regular football just yet.
