On Thursday, Manchester United had Henrikh Mkhitaryan shirts for sale on their website. The shirts were available to buy with the player’s name and a number TBC.

It was there for well over an hour. If it was an error then it has to be assumed Manchester United found out about it in less time than that, and it’s not a big thing to remove.

Perhaps it was a mistake, and nobody at Manchester United twigged in well over an hour, despite it being all over social media and reported by newspapers and the Press Association. Impressive stuff.

Or it was purposeful and part of some elaborate attempt to build hype and therefore generate website hits, build general media and fan interest, and get juicy new figures to present to potential future sponsors.

Either way, it hasn’t gone down well in Germany, and has been reported on by Bild, Der Westen, Kicker and others.

The situation has been called embarrassing, and poor form, and the German media have a point. Borussia Dortmund are losing another star player and probably expect a little more respect.

The only excuse Manchester United have is incompetence.
