Julen Lopetegui coached Hector Herrera when the current Real Madrid manager was in charge at FC Porto from 2014 to 2016.
The midfielder’s contract with the club runs down at the end of the season and the Champions League winners were unable to land him in the summer because they were unwilling to pay €45m for the player.
Catalan newspaper Sport has a story about the Mexican international in today’s edition and they claim the 13-time European champions’ manager wanted to bring in the 28-year-old to the club as a replacement for Mateo Kovacic, who joined Chelsea on a loan deal.
The report also claims that ex-Spain coach is not the only who wants to bring the Primeira Liga player to the club as Mauricio Pochettino is ‘interested’ in taking him to Tottenham Hotspur in January.
AS Roma are also looking at Herrera and with interest from several clubs, it may come as a good news for Porto, if they have to cash in from his sale at the start of next year, even though they would insist their player sign an extension.
Herrera is ‘the’ rumour for the European media right now, and Tottenham are being continually dragged in.
