After months and months of speculation, which even involved Newcastle United, Argentine defender Lisandro Lopez has finally asked to leave Benfica.
The news are brought by newspaper Record today, who claims the player doesn’t understand why he’s been having so little game time this season.
López is expected to look for a new club in January, but the Eagles are not making his departure easy.
The Portuguese side are still demanding a big fee for him, which would be something between €10m and €15m. Quite a lot for a player who has only four appearances this season.
When speaking of possible destinations, Record doesn’t have much to say. They only claim that ‘English clubs stay attentive’, and the only side who get a mention are Newcastle United, due to the old links with the defender.
But we must recall that when speaking to Sport Witness earlier this month, Lopez’ agent Gustavo Goni claimed that there had been ‘no contacts’ from the Magpies, even though he confirmed approaches from England.
Maybe there’s secret Newcastle United interest, so secret they haven’t yet informed the player’s agent.
