On Sunday we covered a scouting report from A Bola which showed Sheffield Wednesday had someone watch the match between Vitoria Setubal and Rio Ave at the weekend. With the Championship club having a Portuguese manager in Carlos Carvalhal, it makes some sense to pursue more signings in that market.
Manchester United and Arsenal were also there, along with Eibar, Bordeaux, Lille, Nice, Lens, Saint Etienne, PSV, FC Koln, Genoa, Trabzonspor, PAOK and Steaua București.
There was no indication who Sheffield Wednesday were watching, but it wasn’t the only match Carvalhal’s spies watched in Portugal. A Bola reveals they had someone at Benfica’s match on Sunday too.
Benfica, playing at home, beat Moreirense 3-0. It’s not the first time Sheffield Wednesday have scouted Benfica this season, so there may well be a very ambitious transfer target on the cards.
Currently 7th in the Championship, much will depend on which league Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in next season. Promotion could see some Portuguese targets, previously deemed unlikely, become much more available. Yes, even at Benfica.
Joining Sheffield Wednesday were Manchester United and Arsenal, again, Club Brugge, FC Koln, Lille, Nice, Lens PAOK, Eibar, Sevilla and Kansas City.
