When Raul Jimenez scored Wolves’ second of the match, to send his team two clear of Watford in the FA Cup semi-final, he celebrated by wearing a mask.
The Mexican striker has recently been speaking to Sin Cara, who is his compatriot and a huge WWE star. Known for wearing the masks, Sin Cara clearly encouraged the Wolves player into the celebration, but it didn’t go down well with everyone.
Watford made a brilliant comeback in the match and thanks to goals from Gerard Deulofeu and Troy Deeney they took it to extra time. The former Barcelona player then scored the winner for Javi Gracia’s side.
After the match, Deeney made it clear he wasn’t happy with Jimenez’s mask, explaining it was a good job he’d not been in the vicinity when it happened.
The Watford captain made it clear he thinks the striker is a top player, but felt the celebration was a bit much considering the game wasn’t won.
Since then, Sin Cara has responded, making it clear he thinks there’s been something of a misunderstanding.
Speaking to ESPN Mexico, he explained: “The mask is something cultural. There are people who maybe don’t understand, who take the celebration as an offence, because a player from the other team got angry and said a silly comment, but they do not know our culture, they do not know about soccer and wrestling in Mexico. I really felt very happy, because I had an immense joy that Raul pulled that mask on and is triumphing in the English league.
“I never imagined that my mask would become famous all over the world, I do not think Raul imagined he was going to play in the Premier League, that mask represents that you can, that there is an opportunity to get to WWE, to the leagues in Europe, that young people do not stop dreaming, to keep going, to continue fighting for their goals.”
