Things have been happening very quickly in Arsenal’s reported chase for Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo.
It was last week that the Gunners were first said to be interested in the signing, and, more recently, the English media claimed there was an offer for the transfer.
The 26-year-old has been living a complicated situation at the Eagles, because following behavioural problems at the end of the last season, it seemed certain he would be sold this summer, especially because he’s entering the final year of his contract.
So as Benfica work on their pre-season in England, club president Rui Costa arrived at their training session today and was surrounded by Portuguese journalists.
One of the questions was about Grimaldo’s situation, and he claimed the player has been working normally.
“I’m going to talk to him now, see if he’s okay. Grimaldo is like all the other players, he is working and in time we will…,” said Rui Costa (via Mais Futebol).
A reporter then interrupted him to mention that there’s a concrete offer from Arsenal for the transfer.
The official then claimed not to be aware of it.
“You have been saying that. None of this came to me. I don’t know where that came from.”
Arsenal’s offer for Grimaldo was reportedly of €7m, and as good sellers, Benfica are said to be trying to get a bigger price.
