Donny van de Beek’s situation at Manchester United appears to be causing over the top concern around Europe. Arriving from Ajax in the last window, the Dutchman has so far amassed 693 minutes across all competitions.
He’s appeared, even if just as a short substitute stint, in all but three Premier League matches he’s been available for this season, and in every Champions League game.
With Manchester United looking to have a strong squad, it perhaps shouldn’t be so surprising that Van de Beek wasn’t signed to immediately be a regular starter. The player himself seems content with his situation, probably knowing that chances will continue to come his way.
However, the chatter continues and he’s now inevitably been dragged into the Christian Eriksen mess. The Inter Milan player has 373 minutes across all competitions for Antonio Conte’s side this season, and was signed from Tottenham to be a leading light.
He’s scored no goals, contributed no assists, and didn’t get off the bench for the past two Serie A matches.
AC Milan legend Alessandro Costacurta now works as a pundit on Italian TV and he’s suggested a swap deal for Van de Beek could be a good way out. Quoted by Calciomercato, the former defender said: “Eriksen would be someone to exchange with someone who does not play in England, with Manchester United, Arsenal… Van de Beek, for example, could be a good idea for Inter.”
Swapping 23-year-old Van de Beek, whose best years are likely ahead of him, for 28-year-old Eriksen doesn’t seem like the most attractive of ideas for Manchester United.
