Newcastle United will hold ‘concrete talks’ with Ajax’s director of football, Marc Overmars, as soon as they sound out candidates for the position.
That’s according to De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen, who says the Dutchman could be interested in the move to St James Park.
Newcastle are currently on the hunt for a replacement for manager Steve Bruce after electing to sack him last week.
That’s not the only appointment they want to make, though, with it believed their new owners are keen to put a director of football in place to help direct the grand rebuilding they have planned in the coming years.
Overmars is one of the names reportedly on the list, with reports in the Netherlands making it clear that his work at Ajax in recent years had not gone unnoticed.
Indeed, it’s even been reported that he could look to bring Ajax manager Erik ten Hag with him, meaning Newcastle could land a double appointment in one fell swoop.
Now, according to Driessen, talks are set to get underway sooner rather than later about the potential move.
“They are going to get concrete soon and will start talking to each other in the short term,” he told Voetbalpraat, relayed by Voetbal 4 U.
“It’s not like he will definitely be the new man there, if he decides to (hold talks). In England, it’s customary to talk to several candidates. Overmars is one of them.
“Of course, you hear things sometimes. He has been at Ajax for ten years now; he has shown it all there.
“He also knows that he can never compete with Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain at Ajax.”
