Just yesterday, we covered a piece from Brazilian journalist Bruno Andrade which detailed the plans that Arsenal defender David Luiz has for the next season.
It was said that following the end of his contract with the Gunners, the player would now like to return to his former club Benfica or join a club from his home country.
Well, it turns out that Andrade was later on Portuguese TV, where he brought the news to TVI24 show Mais Bastidores, and had very similar claims there.
And after detailing David Luiz’s wish to go back to Benfica, a club for whom he has huge respect and admiration, there were people at the table who didn’t think the possibility is very real.
It was first pundit Nuno Dias who claimed that the move would depend on David Luiz’s reality, since Benfica are well served with experienced defenders and are not in need of another one right now.
Then journalist Rui Pedro Braz came up with a similar opinion, but using stronger words.
Since the Eagles currently have the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Nicolas Otamendi in the squad, he claimed it’s ‘impossible’ that the Lisbon side would sign David Luiz this summer, since ‘it doesn’t make sense’ adding a 34-year-old to the defence.
Besides the two experienced players, Benfica have also been using Brazilian player Lucas Veríssimo, who arrived from Santos in January and has been standing out in his first months at the club.
So, regardless of David Luiz’s wish, it’s hard to think of the Eagles having room for him in the squad going forward, even when taking into account his history with the Portuguese side.
