Last week, Manchester United allowed Jadon Sancho to return to Borussia Dortmund on a loan deal until the end of this season.

The Red Devils, who paid €85m to secure his services in 2021, haven’t agreed to include an option or obligation to buy as part of Sancho’s loan move to the German club.

BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl has told Sky Deutschland, relayed by Florian Plettenberg, that the Manchester United owned player is unlikely to be at the Signal Iduna Park after this season.

When asked what will happen with Sancho in the summer, he said: “We will see… Realistically, the chance of Sancho playing for Dortmund in the next season isn’t very high. There was no possibility, in any form economically feasible for us, to secure an option to buy.”

The 23-year-old started his second spell with the Bundesliga side on a positive note. At the weekend, he came off the bench  and registered an assist in Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Darmstadt.

Kehl claims the England international could attract interest from other clubs, if he were to shine at the German club. In addition to this, the overall cost of the operation would make it difficult for BVB to buy Sancho.

“The salary is one thing, the transfer package is another. If the player develops as we hope, in the summer, other clubs will likely become active. He might then be a category of player that could be challenging for Borussia Dortmund in terms of feasibility,” Kehl explained.

Sancho’s contract at Old Trafford lasts until 2026 and his future could be away from Manchester United if Erik ten Hag is still at the club next season. The player didn’t feature for the Red Devils since last August after a fallout with the manager.
