Bayern Munich sports director Christoph Freund has insisted that Joao Palhinha’s new contract at Fulham “doesn’t mean anything” at this moment in time.
The Bayern director has been quoted commenting on the Fulham star by TZ after his failed move to Bavaria on deadline day.
The Portuguese midfielder seemed set to join Bayern in a big money move, even travelling to Munich for a medical and to do media work for the transfer.
It never went through, though, as Fulham refused to send the paperwork late in the window after failing to find a replacement for a key player.
That inevitably led to some frustration, but the belief was that Bayern would return in the January transfer window and get a deal closed then instead.
That has been thrown into doubt, though, as not long after the window had closed Fulham announced that Palhinha had signed a new deal at the club.
Reports from Germany have insisted that means nothing and Freund has somewhat backed that up, insisting “it doesn’t mean anything at the moment” when asked about the subject.
Now the reality is that he simply means it’s not a subject for now given the window is closed, and he certainly hinted as much by also stating that “all the energy and focus is on the next three and a half months.”
Still, it appears the news of that Fulham contract has not created the issue at Bayern that most would have thought it would.
They appear to be unperturbed at the moment and Freund ‘cooly’ responding to the latest questions indicates as much.
