The wonderfully named Valentijn Driessen doesn’t sound like a happy Dutchman today.
In a column for De Telegraaf, the Dutch journalist derides the quality which was on show at the weekend’s KNVB cup final.
It should have been a showpiece, and scouts from Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, PSG, Bayern Munich and Barcelona were present, but Driessen suggests they could all have made a sharp exit towards the end after not being impressed.
Starting his column ‘What poverty they were served at AZ-Feyenoord’, it’s clear there’s a growing Dutch frustration with the level of talents coming through at some of the country’s biggest clubs.
Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal scouts may as well all have left 15 minutes before the end, Driessen believes, such was the dire show.
None of the other Dutchmen on show was suitable of comparison, explains the column, adding: ‘With so many (potential) Dutch internationals on the pitch, the poverty of Dutch football is underlined once again.’
The foreigners on show didn’t stand out either as Feyenoord won 3-0, and Driessen sounds like he had a Sunday to forget.
