Villarreal defender Juan Foyth has admitted he ‘wanted to leave’ Tottenham after finding himself out of the picture under Jose Mourinho.
The Argentine is currently starring for Villarreal, who he joined on a permanent deal from Tottenham last year after a loan spell the year before.
He had arrived at Tottenham when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge, joining in an £11.7m deal from Estudiantes as Pochettino looked to bolster his defence.
He would spend three years at the club but only manage 32 appearances in all competitions, failing to develop as the club had hoped he would.
He’s instead done that with Villarreal, where he is now an undisputed starter under Unai Emery and shining in La Liga and the Champions League alike.
Tottenham fans are naturally looking on and wondering what could have been, but the defender admits it was never going to be after he fell out of favour under Mourinho.
“When he (Mourinho) arrived, I was doing well, but I had moments when I didn’t deserve to play. I wanted to leave and have more continuity,” he told Onda Cero.
As for how he feels when it comes to Villarreal: “I never thought I would have a feeling like this for a club. From the first day, I knew I wanted to stay.”
