FC Nordsjælland defender Karlo Bartolec has told the Croatian media he could have got a move to Southampton in the summer but a transfer never happened due to Cedric Soares remaining at the club.
Speaking to 24sata, Bartolec was asked about eventually getting his big move to a major league in Europe: “I could have gone to Southampton this summer. I was hoping Portugal’s Soares would go to Manchester United, but that failed, so I missed my move to the Premiership. They were looking for €25m euros for him, and I could have been his replacement.”
Soares was loosely been linked with a move to Manchester United earlier this year with reports Jose Mourinho was looking to bring in a right back.
However, the Premier League side’s supposed interest in the Southampton player went quiet when they signed Diogo Dalot from FC Porto during the last transfer window.
Bartolec will still be hoping he can get a transfer to a top league after spending two seasons playing in Denmark, making over fifty league appearances for FC Nordsjælland.
It’s reported the 23 year old is being tracked by European clubs and could get a move in the next window.
