Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has insisted his future will be sorted in the next few weeks, with his ‘priority’ currently to remain at St James Park.
Schar has been with Newcastle since arriving from Deportivo La Coruna in a £3.6m deal in 2018, making 91 appearances in all competitions so far.
His contract is set to expire this summer, and so far, there has been no progress on him signing an extension to remain in the North East.
Whether the club want to keep him remains to be seen, although he has been a regular under Eddie Howe in recent weeks.
Indeed, Newcastle’s failure to sign any other central defenders beyond Dan Burn has given Schar a more prominent role in recent weeks, an opportunity the 30-year-old has taken with both hands.
All indications are that Newcastle would like to keep him long term, and Schar insists they will deal with an extension soon.
“Everyone at the club knows how comfortable I feel in this team and under this coach,” he told SRF in Switzerland.
“I can well imagine staying at Newcastle beyond the summer. It wasn’t always like that; things weren’t always very happy for me under the old owner.
“The next few weeks will show how things will go for me. Newcastle are certainly my priority.”
