Chilean newspaper El Grafico has published today a long interview with Universidad Catolica defender Valber Huerta.
Back in January, the player returned to his home country, and has been doing pretty well this season, but there’s some interesting quotes about his career before that.
Huerta left Chile at 21, and spent almost five years belonging to European sides, first Granada and then Watford. However, none of these periods were successful, since he’s mostly been loaned out back to South America.
Now belonging to Universidad Católica on a permanent move, he was asked if he left Chile too early, and says there are many reasons why things haven’t worked for him in Europe.
“I don’t like to go into more details, but there were situations that occurred at the time, different possibilities. Perhaps it wasn’t the most appropriate option to have made that decision, but if I had stayed in Chile, I don’t know what would have happened.
“I could have been loaned, I could have not done well and in the end there is no certainty of what could have happened. I see the positive side, I have taken a very long turn and at 26 I’m very happy where I am now, in this case, at Universidad Católica.”
Huerta signed for Watford on a move from Granada in January 2017, but he never made an appearance for the Hornets, spending two years on loan at Huachipato. After the spell, he was sold to Universidad Católica in January this year.
El Grafico mentions that Watford still have 50% of his rights, meaning that the Hornets still believe he could be involved in a big transfer. That’s why they ask him if he feels he could have another shot in European football.
“Yes, but I take it in the same way as the theme of the national team: I am only focused on continuing to comply here and then later what will happen will be seen. Now I stay focused on Catolica.”
