After a few weeks of debating who between Marten de Roon and Jordy Clasie would be the ideal replacement for Lucas Biglia, Lazio appeared to choose the Southampton midfielder.
This was, in essence, what Il Messaggero were reporting on Wednesday, as they claimed that his availability for a loan + €10m option to buy is what made him jump to top of the list.
However, that’s not quite how Gazzetta dello Sport put it on Thursday.
The Italian newspaper explain the two Dutchmen are still the main candidates for the role, but that the loan + option to buy was Lazio’s doing, and is the offer the club have decided to make for both players.
And, in some kind of magical coincidence, it also appears that both clubs are asking for the same amount for their midfielders, with Gazzetta explaining that the deals are just €2m off being agreed.
So, as things stand, according to GdS, both Middlesbrough and Southampton are seemingly happy with a loan move for their players as long as they can get €12m down the line.
We don’t buy it.
We do buy, however, that Lazio are being stingy right now, mostly because Lucas Biglia hasn’t been sold yet, and until that happens, they aren’t going to start throwing money around.
