Deadline day brought a story from France that Leeds United had initiated contact to sign a versatile defender.
L’Equipe claimed Leeds were ‘pressing most’ to sign the player, and were the latest in a line of English clubs to be interested in Remy. With time running out, Leeds United quickly needed to make an offer, and their approach would have had a good chance of success, but nothing followed.
There were no follow-up reports from L’Equipe or from media close to Montpellier, Remy’s club, indeed it’s not been mentioned since.
Tuesday’s edition of the French newspaper goes through each club and their squads after the transfer window, looking at the team to be fielded. It’s clear Remy isn’t a core player for Montpellier, but that’s been the case for a while now.
A summer transfer wouldn’t have been a surprise, and before Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Fulham were said to be interested, with Crystal Palace linked during the January transfer window.
Remy’s contract with Montpellier runs out in June 2018, which gives Leeds United and others the chance of a cheap move in January, or a free transfer next summer.
A winter switch is certainly very possible.
