It’s only June 20th, and already the transfer rumour mill is a bit of a mess.

Take Mariano Diaz and Tottenham.

At around lunchtime on Tuesday, HITC published an article titled ‘Report: Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz wants Tottenham Hotspur move’.

It was based on claims made by the Real Madrid section of OK Diario, not the most reliable of places. However, even stranger, it was based on a report a month old.

Whatever the reasons for it being rolled out again, and it’s almost certainly got more to do with Tottenham transfer stories being thin on the ground than a genuine hunch, it’s spread.

The Daily Mirror quickly picked it up for their transfer blog, without crediting anyone, saying ‘Mauricio Pochettino is mulling over a move for Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz.’

From there, other websites such as ReadTottenham picked it up and credited the claim to The Mirror.

And a transfer rumour is born. Just like Adrien Silva, it won’t go away now, regardless of it being based on practically nothing, and old nothing at that.

It’ll likely be picked up in Spain, maybe Italy, and Mariano will quite possibly be a name Tottenham fans are used to soon.

There is an actual Mariano update in Spain on Tuesday, and that’s Marca saying Real Madrid want €15m, and are quite keen on a repurchase option. Daniel Levy is hardly likely to agree to such a clause, which likely means this piece of make-believe is unlikely to become reality.
