If you ever needed an example of how badly a transfer can go, Max Meyer’s time at Crystal Palace is the perfect example.
The German midfielder arrived at Selhurst Park with great expectations back in 2018 but has never got going at the club, managing just 56 appearances, two goals and three assists.
At the minute he finds himself far out of the picture, managing as many appearances in Premier League 2 as in the Premier League and missing out on Crystal Palace’s squad since the end of October.
It’s a desperate situation for the 25-year-old, with numerous reports stating that a move in January would be the best solution for all parties.
His time in London has often been covered in Germany, where they’ve happily covered his fall from grace over the last two years.
BILD take up the mantle today, looking at Meyer’s current predicament and not missing their chance to stick the knife in.
They say the fact nobody has heard from him ‘shouldn’t surprise anyone’ as he has undoubtedly ‘left the big stage’.
It’s claimed that the player should see this season as a ‘lost one’ with more absences from the squad than in it, and the newspaper believe he has nobody but himself to blame after his exit from Schalke.
That was a move ‘stylised by his advisor’ who convinced Meyer he was world-class and put big ideas in his head.
That saw him leave as ‘a fool’, who left his hometown club ‘with nonsense in his head to conquer the world’ but ultimately ended up at a ‘middle-class club’ in England where he has ‘meekly disappeared into oblivion’.
He’s now desperate for a move in January, with Crystal Palace wanting to ‘get rid of him’ in the summer and maintaining that stance to this day.
BILD state there has to be someone to ‘bring him out of the blue’ but ‘it’s going to be difficult’ to find that club.
That’s an extremely big fall for a player who headed to England two years ago full of hope but has utterly failed to live up to that hype, something the German newspaper are very happy to make him aware of.
