Brighton and Hove Albion youngster Moises Caicedo has been likened to a mix between N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba as he starts to shine in Belgium,
Caicedo joined Brighton last year after being courted by some of the biggest names in Europe and is spending this season on loan in Belgium with Beerschot.
After a difficult start to life with the club, he’s started to shine in recent weeks, starting their last five games, scoring twice and providing an assist.
His latest good performance came in the 2-0 win over Genk, in which the Brighton man was one of the stars of the show.
That’s led Het Niuewsblad to take a look at the youngster, writing an extensive profile on his career so far and bringing in some experts to analyse just how good he is.
One of those is Enrico Castro-Montes, who is currently working on a doctorate at KU Leuven on the history of Ecuadorian football.
That means he knows all about the country and their next set of talented stars, of which he says the Brighton youngster is at the top of the pile.
“Along with 19-year-old Piero Hincapié of Bayer Leverkusen, Caicedo is the hope of Ecuadorian football fans,” he said.
“Hincapié is a central defender; Caicedo covers the whole field. He is much more eye-catching.”
“There will be a lot of pressure on Caicedo’s shoulders. His nickname in Ecuador is ‘La Joya’, the jewel. In his own country, he is really seen as the crown jewel of a new generation.
“Caicedo really has everything to become the best Ecuadorian footballer of all time. I think that off the ball, he is indeed somewhat reminiscent of Kante, but on the ball, he resembles Paul Pogba with his flair and his technique.
“That’s also how they describe him in Ecuador: a cross between Kanté and Pogba.”
“I saw him score against Chile last week and realised that in Belgium, we haven’t seen half of his potential yet. If he can adapt even better to the physical game in Belgium, he will be unstoppable in the coming months.”
