The chairman of Gent has told the Belgian media they’ve considered re-signing Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels. The Championship side signed Sels in the last summer window, but the Belgium international has seen himself frozen out.
De Witte said it is something they’ve discussed, but at the moment they don’t think it would be a good idea for either party: “Of course we’ve thought about it, but I don’t know whether it’s wise, both for the players and for us. I’m concerned about Sels, Kums and Depoitre, but their return at the moment is not in the pipeline.”
Earlier today we covered claims from Belgium that Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez hasn’t explained to Sels why he isn’t his first choice goalkeeper, despite being brought in to replace Tim Krul.
It was also reported Sels has become frustrated at Newcastle United, and is unhappy with the little amount of training undertaken.
With Krul getting games at Dutch side AZ and Karl Darlow currently keeping Sels out of the Newcastle United team, the Belgian may need to find a new club in the summer.
