Manchester City have this week received an injury blow with the news that Benjamin Mendy has had to undergo a surgical intervention on his knee.
Mendy only recovered from a cruciate injury at the end of last season, and whilst he was able to join up Didier Deschamps World Cup winning squad, the French media repeatedly explained he wasn’t near his top level.
The player’s start to the season hasn’t been complete plain sailing and it would appear his meniscus has been causing an issue, as is often the case following a cruciate injury.
At Sport Witness we’ve been following football injuries for some years and for a footballer to have a medial or meniscus issue not so long after a cruciate layoff is quite common, those who manage not to do so are fortunate or have managed their recovery better.
L’Equipe say Mendy’s absence will be ‘counted in months’, after an operation which took place in Barcelona this week. The exact duration isn’t known, but the French newspaper clearly doesn’t believe it’s just going to be a few week layoff.
