Inter Milan’s search for a new midfielder has produced a long list of names in recent weeks, with Wolfsburg’s Luiz Gustavo named the favourite by the Italian press on Thursday.

However, things can quickly change in football, and Friday’s man at the top of the pile is another Brazilian, this time one who plays in the Premier League.

Deployed as a utility man either in front of or in the centre of defence by Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva is the latest man to be added to Inter Milan’s wish list for the January transfer window, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting negotiations are already under way between the two clubs.

The Italian newspaper claim that contacts between Liverpool and Inter have ‘multiplied’ over the past few hours, although few details have emerged about what has been discussed.

Used very sparingly by his German manager, the Brazilian’s move to Italy would be anything but complicated, as he wouldn’t use a non-EU slot in their squad due to him owning an Italian passport.

With Miranda, Felipe Melo, Gabriel Barbosa and Eder all already at Inter Milan, settling in also shouldn’t be an issue for Lucas, whom Gazzetta say would need very little convincing were the two clubs to agree on a transfer or a loan with a view to buy.

This is the first mention of Inter’s interested in the Liverpool midfielder, but Gazzetta seem pretty convinced, and we wouldn’t be surprised if this developed into something serious rather quickly.
