There’s a lot of confusion regarding the future of Jordan Veretout at Aston Villa, not helped by Saint-Etienne’s apparent inability to get anything done as of yet.
The Villa Park loanee has spent the last season on loan at Saint-Etienne, and has hinted he would be very open to staying, yet there has been very little movement from the Ligue 1 club’s side to make that happen.
Of course, seeing their long-term manager, Christophe Galtier, leave has put Veretout’s future a bit further down the priority list, but there is also some confusion in the media as to what is going on behind the scenes.
On Thursday, But! Football Club explain that Saint-Etienne’s salary cap is what is holding up the deal to take Veretout away from Aston Villa permanently, yet the French side have made it clear in the past that they would move away from the ‘salary cap’ format for the upcoming transfer window.
Most players at the club are limited to €100k/month maximum, which Veretout’s salary at Aston Villa certainly surpasses.
With Nantes making it clear they would like to bring their former star back, and Dr Tony Xia hoping he could convince Veretout to stay at Villa Park next season, we could be blessed with a three-way tug of war this summer, if that’s even a thing.
