Just under a week ago, we relayed a claim from Italy that Tottenham were looking at Cristian Romero to bolster their backline.
Currently still technically a Juventus player, the defender is on loan at Atalanta, who have reportedly made it clear they will exercise their €16m purchase clause a year early.
That means they are the club to negotiate with, and Gianluigi Longari, who brought the news to our attention in the first place, has doubled down on the claim on Monday.
Explaining he’s had it ‘confirmed’ that Tottenham are ‘in the race for Romero from Atalanta’, he also adds that Spurs will face competition from Barcelona for the player.
That probably shouldn’t come as a surprise, since the defender spent the last month with Lionel Messi during their victorious Copa América run in Brazil.
Either way, Tottenham do appear to be seriously interested in the Argentine, who could be an alternative (or a complement) to Takehiro Tomiyasu, on whim Fabio Paratici still seems to be working on.
Confirmed. Tottenham in the race for #Romero from #Atalanta. Also #Barcelona are working for El Cuti. @tvdellosport #THFC @tvdellosport https://t.co/z4YuC39pID
