About a month or so ago, there was a brief period where it appeared Manchester United were going all out to try and sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta.

The Serie A side had made it clear they intended to trigger their option to buy in the loan deal for the Juventus player a year early, meaning they were the ones to negotiate with regarding a purchase.

Then, a bit of silence, which confused a few, but now it appears Tottenham Hotspur are picking up the slack and joining the race for the Argentine, who won last year’s Best Defender award in the Italian league.

This comes from SportItalia journalist Gianluigi Longari, who explains ‘interest is growing’ for the centre-back, and while Manchester United are ‘evaluating other options’, Spurs have ‘enquired about him’.

However, it’s worth pointing out Fabio Paratici and co. aren’t the only ones joining their Premier League rivals, because Barcelona, albeit a bit cash strapped at the moment, also made a similar enquiry to Tottenham’s.

That’s all there is to it for now, but with the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nikola Milenkovic and now Cristian Romero being targeted, it’s clear Nuno Espirito Santo and his director of football believe better defenders are needed in north London.
