Manchester City fullback João Cancelo on Friday gave an exclusive interview to Portuguese outlet Eleven Sports.
The quotes that have been doing the rounds in the player’s home country are regarding the his friendship with teammate Bernardo Silva, which has been going on for a long time now.
Cancelo revealed that the two have been living together in Manchester, and explianed they’re too very different people.
“Bernardo is now living with me in my house. As long as my girlfriend isn’t here, we’re living together,” João Cancelo told Eleven Sports (via Mais Futebol).
“Bernardo Silva and I have a relationship for a long time, we are from the same generation at Benfica, we have a very beautiful friendship because we are two completely opposite people and I think that’s the funny thing. He’s a typical person from Lisbon and I’m just that guy who practically came from the street.”
Long before meeting again at Manchester City, João Cancelo and Bernardo Silva spent multiple years at Benfica’s academy. They both joined the club’s youth ranks in 2007 and coincidentally stayed until 2014, when they took different paths.
Cancelo left the Eagles for Valencia, then playing for Inter Milan and Juventus until signing for the Citizens in a €65m move in 2019.
Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva’s path to England was a little shorter. He moved from Benfica to AS Monaco, and it was in French football that he drew Manchester City’s attention. Pep Guardiola’s side spent €50m to sign him from the Ligue 1 side in 2017.
