On Tuesday, we covered claims from Germany which stated Aston Villa have sent a scout to follow Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid. It was also reported he wants to leave next summer, and it would cost €10m to secure his services.
Deichstube relay claims made elsewhere that several clubs have made contact to sign the 24-year-old in January and Aston Villa ‘in particular’ are ‘very interested’ in securing his services.
The website, which dedicates it coverage to the Bundesliga side, got in touch with Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz for an update on claims of Aston Villa’s interest in Schmid.
“It is completely normal that other clubs are interested in a player with such a positive development,” he said.
The attacking midfielder managed four goals and seven assists last season and has a goal and two assists from 13 matches this season. The German club’s official has categorically ruled out an exit for him in the winter market, but not for next summer.
“The fact that Romano is leaving us in the winter is not an issue for us at all. He is very important to our team, and we will not do without him during the current season,” Fritz explained.
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the summer. There will still be a lot of time until then.”
Deichstube state Werder Bremen could find it difficult to retain the Austria international beyond this season if he were to continue his positive development. They add his club can ‘make a lot of money’ if they decide to sell him.
Whether Unai Emery’s side will continue to maintain their interest in Schmid until the end of this season remains to be seen.
