While an unfortunate situation for Marseille, Bafétimbi Gomis’ injury is a positive for one person: Tottenham loanee Clinton N’Jié, as L’Equipe in France look at his situation.
Bought by Mauricio Pochettino the previous season from Lyon, the Cameroon international hasn’t exactly had the best season in the south of France, often blocked out of the team by the likes of Rémy Cabella and Florian Thauvin, but in the Swansea loanee’s absence, he will get to play more.
Changing from a 433 to a 4231 against Rennes last weekend, Rudi Garcia decided to play Clinton N’Jié up top, with Maxime Lopez right behind him, and it worked.
Marseille walked away with a 2-0 win, with the Tottenham player bagging the opener, and having a solid game all around.
There have been doubts about his future at the club beyond this season, with Marseille able to buy him permanently from Spurs for around €7m if they so wish, yet if he performs well over the coming weeks, with Gomis possibly out until April, that could change.
It seems unlikely the player has a future at Tottenham, with the club buying Georges-Kévin N’Koudou, a very similar player, in the summer and barely playing him, so perhaps a full-time return to Ligue 1 might be what’s best for N’Jié.
