Pushing to leave Inter to return to Chelsea, Romelu Lukaku’s decision to do so backfired quite impressively for the Belgium international.

He never got on with Thomas Tuchel, and failed to impress following a £100m+ investment from the Blues, which led to him wanting out after just a year back.

Inter then reappeared, happy to take him back on loan, which led to long talks about a potential return to Italy.

They dragged on for a while, but an agreement was eventually found between all parties, and Lukaku is now back in Serie A.

His start to the season has been hindered by an injury, but he’s now back, and scored in his most recent appearance, a seven minute cameo at the end of a 4-0 win over Viktoria Plzen.

Despite this setback, the club’s faith in him never wavered, and he is expected to return to the starting line-up in the very near future as he prepares ahead of the World Cup.

Still, it’s what comes after that is also importance, and there have already been many reports about how Inter and Chelsea already know what will happen.

Gazzetta dello Sport talk about this on Thursday, and explain what the future for the Italians could look like now that Steven Zhang has made it clear he doesn’t want to sell his club.

They state that ‘obviously, the signing of Romelu Lukaku’s second paid loan will have priority’, and that there is already a ‘general agreement to revive the formula with Chelsea’.

However, ‘black and white documents will make the agreement secure’, which is something that will need to be worked on.

Still, it’s pretty clear Inter want to keep the Chelsea striker next year, and they will do whatever they can to make that happen, since it’s also what the player wants.
