Barcelona will be able to sign Edinson Cavani from Manchester United in January if the Glazer family are willing to accept a ‘minimum price’ for the striker.
That’s according to Sport, who say the idea of signing Cavani is ‘gaining momentum’ at the Camp Nou as they seek a replacement for Sergio Aguero in January.
The Argentine striker has been ruled out for at least three months with a heart problem, leaving Barcelona in desperate need of reinforcements up front in January.
Cavani has been named as an option on several occasions, having fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United this season following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.
Sport cover Barcelona’s reported interest today and state that Cavani is an option for Barcelona, who will look to bring him to the club in January if he can be signed for a ‘modest price’.
They say that Cavani believes Barcelona ‘fits his interests’ and would allow him to stay at the elite level of football after his time with Napoli, PSG and now Manchester United.
He’s already decided not to renew his contract at Old Trafford but believes he is still capable of playing at the highest level for the next two years.
His contract expires in the summer, so he is free to talk to clubs in Europe come January about a free transfer in the summer transfer window, but Barcelona’s intention is to move earlier and get him on the cheap in January.
They plan to ‘ask’ Manchester United for him, and everything can be closed ‘ahead of time’ if the Glazer brothers accept a ‘minimum price’ for Cavani’s departure.
What price Barcelona want to pay isn’t mentioned but given their well documented financial issues, it’s hard to imagine that price will be very high.
