On June 6th, we covered claims from Spain that Joselu had ‘almost completed’ a transfer from Newcastle United to Alaves.
He was looking to ‘flee’ the Premier League club due to a lack of game time with Rafael Benitez’s side.
A day later it was reported Alaves would be paying around €2m for the 29 year old, and he’d be taking a pay cut to make the move to Spain.
On June 11th, Mundo Deportivo reported the La Liga club were just ‘waiting to announce’ the signing, and it was a ‘matter of hours away’ from being done, however, they also added the following: ‘it only remains that the striker can be dissociated from the contract year that remains with Newcastle.’
That made it sound like no transfer fee had actually been agreed, despite the repeated claims of everything being very close.
Today, Mundo Deportivo say Alaves are just waiting for ‘legal deadlines’ to pass and then they can announce the move. They don’t explain what that specifically relates to, but it could be that they want any cost to show on next year’s accounts.
Spanish clubs finish their financial year at the end of June.
