Toby Alderweireld signed a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur in December 2019, just a month after José Mourinho arrived at the club. His current deal runs down in 2023
Prior to Spurs’ Europa League clash against Royal Antwerp last October, the defender’s father and brother discussed the possibility of the centre-back returning to Antwerp.
According to Voetbal 24, Club Brugge have set their sights on the 31-year-old.
Philippe Clement’s side took Simon Mignolet from Liverpool in 2019 when no one ‘really believed’ the goalkeeper would join Club Brugge. The move was ‘no more or less than a stunt’.
In the past, the Jupiler Pro League winners have taken the help of their own players in bringing new faces to the club. They now want to use Mignolet’s help to ‘lure’ Alderweireld to leave Tottenham for Club Brugge.
There’s belief family reasons could convince the former Southampton man to return to his home country.
The two players are set to meet each other during the next international break, and the report suggests Club Brugge want the ex-Liverpool man to tell Alderweireld ‘how much he liked this choice’ of joining the Belgian champions.
Club Brugge also fight for the title every season and may play in the Champions League next season, which could make it even more attractive.
The Belgium league winners remain hopeful Alderweireld can be convinced of these arguments to leave Mourinho’s side ‘quickly’. If not, ‘it does not harm, they think in Brugge’.
Even if the player is ready to return to Belgium, Club Brugge will still have to tackle Daniel Levy and Tottenham to get the deal over the line.
