It’s quite obvious by now that Roma will be trying to sign Chris Smalling permanently following his loan spell from Manchester United.

The Italian side have already admitted they’ve been impressed with his first months at the club, and according to local reports today, things are advancing for a happy ending.

As covered by websites Roma News and Siamo La Roma, a report from Teleradiostereo says contacts have ‘intensified’ for the transfer.

Roma director Gianluca Petrachi has been in touch with Manchester United in recent hours as he wants the signing done as soon as possible.

Given Smalling’s good season in Italy, Roma are afraid that waiting until next summer would give the competition a chance to battle against them for the signing.

Last week, it was also reported that Roma had been in touch with Smalling’s entourage as they’ve been working hard to convince him to stay. So perhaps the talks with Manchester United mean an advance in the negotiations.
