Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã today features a piece explaining that Benfica are ‘worried’ with the situation of several loanees they had out this season.
Players who are considered ‘first tier’ have been failing to get enough minutes abroad, and that might be a problem for the Eagles’ plans.
It turns out that two names on the list left Lisbon for Tottenham Hotspur, and Benfica seem to be disappointed on how things went for both. Those are Gedson Fernandes and Carlos Vinícius.
The midfielder joined Spurs in January 2020, and in one year in London, only made 14 appearances, being brought from the bench for most of them. Correio da Manhã writes that the 22-year-old ‘only started playing when he swapped Tottenham for Galatasaray’ this year.
Regarding Carlos Vinícius, Correio da Manhã points out the striker only played 45 minutes in April and ‘will be sent back’.
The newspaper claims ‘these situations will make Benfica rethink the loanees policy and above all try to get the athletes to stay at the club and fight for a place in the team’.
We better recall, however, that Tottenham had buying options over both Gedson and Carlos Vinícius. So we’re pretty sure the Eagles would now be happy had Spurs’ decision on the future of those two been different.
