With the defender struggling for form in the last few games, there were a few eyebrows raised when Stefano Pioli placed Fikayo Tomori in his starting line up against Juventus.

The outcome of that decision, however, couldn’t have gone better, as Milan walked away with a 3-0 win, and the Chelsea loanee found the back of the net via a header in the 82nd minute for the final goal of the game.

That took Milan one step closer to qualifying for a Champions League spot, which would be crucial in their attempts to sign Tomori from the Blues permanently.

Calciomercato look at what the England international’s header could mean for his future, making it clear the Italian side would ‘promptly purchase’ the 23-year-old should they qualify for the elite European competition.

They would therefore ‘pay all of the €28m’ agreed last January, but that could all change if they falter in the next three games and only make it to the Europa League.

Were that to happen, a decision would need to be made, with Chelsea waiting to see how matters unfold because ‘they never stopped believing in Tomori’s qualities’ despite allowing Frank Lampard to send him out on loan.

They would be ‘happy to welcome him back in their arms’ if Milan do not pay the €28m, even if the defender’s wish is to ‘grow his roots’ with the Italian side, having ‘reiterated’ as much to both Paolo Maldini and Federico Massara in a recent meeting.
