On the verge of losing Jurriën Timber to Arsenal for a big transfer fee, Ajax Amsterdam are looking at Liverpool to fill the gap.

While they could try and convince the Reds with their new money to sign one of the more experienced stars at Anfield, their eyes are set on Sepp van den Berg.

This is according to Voetbal International, who state the Eredivisie side want to ‘strengthen their defence’ with the young Liverpool centre-back.

Van den Berg spent last season on loan at Schalke 04, but returned after the deal ran out, meaning he is available for other clubs to rent.

It’s pointed out there is ‘also German interest’ in the 21-year-old, and Liverpool are ‘prepared to cooperate’ for an exit, even if they would rather it be on a temporary basis.

Ajax are said to be ‘seriously interested’ in the arrival of the centre-back, as they try to bring one, or even two players ‘due to the departure’ of the aforementioned Timber.

Regarding that German interest, it’s said both Union Berlin and FSV Mainz 05 are also keen, giving the player and Liverpool some potential choice over his next steps.

Speaking of the latter, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg took to Twitter a few minutes later to reveal Van den Berg was ‘spotted’ in Frankfurt on Thursday, where he has ‘the permission to negotiate’ a move away from Anfield.

Mainz are said to be in ‘pole position’ for now after the player arrived from Liverpool earlier today.

As for the clubs, they are talking about a potential loan or permanent transfers, and more discussions are scheduled to determine the best course of action.
