Two days ago, Directv Sports Radio journalist Fafi Perez stated that Newcastle United are showing interest in Boca Juniors star Alan Varela.

On Tuesday, TNT Sports journalist Marcos Bonocore explained the defensive midfielder has a $15m [€14.2m] release clause and the Magpies are willing to pay more than that to sign him.

The 21-year-old’s performances have seen him draw attention from Benfica, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen. They have all sent their scouts to watch him closely in action for Boca Juniors.

That’s according to Marca, who also state Newcastle are interested and could ‘get ahead of everyone’ in the race to secure the player’s services.

The Argentine’s deal lasts until December 2026 and Marca say it includes a $20m [€18.9m] release clause.

Newcastle have not yet made their interest formal, but Boca have ‘received information’ they could make an offer of around €18m. Should they do it, the South American club would be willing to sell the midfielder.

There is a possibility that Eddie Howe’s side could agree a deal with Boca Juniors now and let Varela return to the club on loan until June.
