Needing a new midfielder in January, Arsenal opted for the cheap option and signed Jorginho for around €11m.
However, six months later, the Gunners have bigger ambitions, and are going after Declan Rice from West Ham, which could cost them a fee nearing £100m.
Corriere dello Sport on Monday report that this would clearly impact Jorginho’s chances of regular game time at Arsenal next season, which is why an exit, with Maurizio Sarri wanting him at Lazio, could be on the cards.
They write the former Chelsea manager has asked his club for a new midfielder this summer, with two targets being drawn up.
Both have an Arsenal present or past, as the alternative Jorginho is none other than Lucas Torreira, who left the Gunners last summer for good and signed for Galatasaray.
The problem is there is a need to place a ‘convincing’ offer to Arsenal and try and meet what Jorginho currently earns in England, described as a ‘stellar figure’ of €6m/year.
Lazio would need that to be halved to stand a chance, and could then turn to the Growth Decree for help, allowing him to get wages of ‘more than €2m by offering a four-year deal’.
Right now, that seems a bit difficult, but ‘the market always offers surprises’ and if Arsenal to manage to sign Rice, then the prospect of getting Jorginho ‘could be more feasible’.
Sport Mediaset also have their own slant on the matter, and echo some of the same ideas, claiming that a transfer is currently ‘almost impossible to achieve’.
In fact, should negotiations open, it could be ‘on the basis of a paid loan’, but would require long negotiations, something Sarri doesn’t want.
Therefore, Torreira is looking like a more attractive target for now unless something drastically changes at the Emirates.
