It’s been a couple of weeks since the Portuguese media started reporting that Paris Saint Germain had beaten Chelsea for the signing of Sporting midfielder Ugarte.
The player, who’s out on holiday, hadn’t made the transfer official yet, but the Lisbon media was so sure about the move that they even started making big reports about the saga.
It turns out that as Sporting president Frederico Varandas was now interviewed by Sporting TV, he claimed that the transfer is indeed not done yet, and Chelsea may actually have a chance to win that battle. The quotes are brought by newspaper Record.
“He’s a great player, but he is not of PSG, he is of Sporting. Ugarte has a 95% chance of leaving for two big European clubs, one is, as he said, PSG. Two clubs beat the amount of the clause.”
When asked about Chelsea’s move to sign Ugarte, he said: “First he opted for one, then he changed his mind. We said the conditions and that came out of the clause, we have 80% of the pass and we interpret that the buying club has to assume certain things. It’s still not black and white with PSG, there is another club willing to give this amount”.
It turns out, however, that Ugarte himself believes the transfer to PSG is done. Because when speaking to the Uruguayan media on Thursday, he confirmed that he should be in Paris, as relayed by newspaper O Jogo today.
“Now we have to rest a little and then start with everything at PSG. I’m going to a giant club, I haven’t even realised that yet, but I’m going to try to start with everything.”
That obviously makes it a confusing situation, but if Varandas guarantees there’s still a chance Chelsea can sign him, perhaps the Blues should still make a final move.
