Boca Juniors’ pursuit of Edinson Cavani has been known for a while now. The Buenos Aires giants had first been interested in signing him when he left PSG in 2020, and a new attempt was made this year, when the striker thought of leaving Manchester United.
It was always claimed that club vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme was the one responsible to handle talks with the Uruguayan star, and the official now brings a few details on how those negotiations happened.
The Boca Juniors legend this week gave a long interview to TNT Sports, and when quizzed about Cavani, he claims it was the Manchester United player who called him to talk about a potential move.
Riquelme says it all started back in January, when the striker’s first months at Old Trafford hadn’t been great. Then what happened afterwards was crucial for him to sign a contract extension.
“In January, Cavani called me saying that he wanted to come because he was playing little there,” Riquelme told TNT Sports.
“I’ve been speaking with him for a long time and he called me in January to come because he wasn’t playing there. I remember we talked one day and the next day he came in and scored two goals in the last minutes. He made a comeback. From then on he started scoring goals in all the games and they renewed with him.”
Now as Cavani’s deal with Manchester United expires next summer, there’s still a chance he could be playing for Boca Juniors soon.
“He called me in January to see if he was able to come. That’s when I realised that he wants to play for our club. Hopefully at some point we’ll be lucky enough to see him celebrate a goal at La Bombonera, which is what he dreams of happening.”
